Hotel photography ideas: How to get the most out of your shoot

High-quality photography can make all the difference when it comes to promoting your hotel. And with travellers increasingly relying on digital platforms to choose where to stay, strong visual content is essential to stand out in a crowded market. Whether you’re planning a professional shoot or wanting to take photos yourself, thoughtful preparation and creativity are key.

Here are some hotel photography ideas and tips to help you get the most out of your shoot.

1. Photos tell a story

Great hotel photography goes beyond showcasing the space available. Photos tell a story about the experience guests can expect. Think about the visitor’s journey: arriving at reception, enjoying the restaurant, relaxing in their room, or unwinding by the pool. Capture images that highlight the atmosphere and vibe of a hotel, as well as amenities, so potential guests can imagine themselves there.

2. Natural lighting is key

Lighting can make a huge difference. Whenever possible, schedule shoots for times of day when natural light enhances the property, such as early morning or late afternoon.

Consider opening curtains and letting the sunlight in for a warm, inviting look. Artificial lighting should only complement the natural ambience, not overpower it.

3. Showcase rooms

Rooms are often the deciding factor for guests, so make sure they are spotless, uncluttered, and styled appropriately before photographing. Think about what your target audience might want from the rooms available – perhaps that’s a spacious, luxury bathroom, efficient storage or a large, cosy bed. Now highlight those features.

Consider a variety of angles: wide shots to show the full layout, as well as close-ups that focus on details like coffee machines or welcome treats.

4. Highlight communal areas

What can guests enjoy beyond their room? The photography should showcase the entire property. Capture the lobby, bar, restaurants, spa, gym, and outdoor spaces.

Think about what sets your hotel apart: an open fireplace in the lounge, a rooftop terrace with views, or a vibrant cocktail bar. Photograph these spaces when they’re at their best, perhaps staged with guests or props to give a sense of life.

5. Include lifestyle shots

Lifestyle photography adds personality. Shots of guests enjoying breakfast, a couple relaxing by the pool, or a business traveller working in the lounge make the hotel feel lived-in and relatable.

Try and include staff where possible – and make sure your staff look happy, helpful and professional, to convey the right brand image.

6. Don’t forget the details

Small touches help define the character of a hotel. Photograph items such as artwork, signature dishes, welcome drinks, or branded toiletries. These details often reflect the style and quality of the hotel, and they work perfectly for social media content where close-up, visually rich images perform well.

7. Capture the exterior and location

A strong exterior shot is crucial – it’s often the first thing guests see. Take photographs at different times of day to capture the best atmosphere, whether that’s golden-hour light or a beautifully lit evening scene. If the hotel has a stunning location, include images of nearby landmarks, beaches, or cityscapes to showcase the setting.
